Qualifications for a Deacon at Smithville FBC

The qualifications for deacons shall be those New Testament standards outlined in Acts 6:1-8 and 1 Timothy 3:8-13. Deacons are expected to be models of a Christian lifestyle and commitment worthy of emulation by other members of the church. Deacons are expected to participate in the life of the church with a goal of ministry and service to the church body. Deacons must be of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom and willing to serve and minister to others. A deacon should avoid any activity which may become a stumbling block to another believer or which would adversely affect witnessing to a non-believer. Deacons and their spouses will prepare the baptistery and aide those being baptized.

Using the Bible as a guide for deacon election, the following guidelines are recommended:

1.A male, 21 years of age and a member of the church for a period of not less than 2 years.
2.A man faithful to the church and attends its worship services regularly.
3.A man who will reverence Sunday as the Lord’s Day of rest and worship.
4.A man who is a total abstainer of all alcoholic beverages.
5.A man who tithes his income to God’s work.
6.A man who has no connection with divorce within his marriage.
